Free School Meals
Could your child be eligible for Free School Meals?
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are automatically entitled to a free school lunch through Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM).
However, it is still important for families to apply for Free School Meals if they may be eligible. This can help the school access additional funding to support eligible pupils and may also give families access to other support.
Free School Meals from September 2026
From the start of the 2026/27 academic year, children from households receiving Universal Credit are entitled to receive a free school meal, regardless of household earnings.
There are now two categories of benefits-related Free School Meals:
Targeted Free School Meals
This applies to families receiving Universal Credit with annual household earnings of £7,400 or less, as well as some families receiving other qualifying support. Children eligible for Targeted Free School Meals may also attract additional funding for school, including Pupil Premium.
Expanded Free School Meals
This applies to children from households receiving Universal Credit whose earnings are above the £7,400 threshold. These children are entitled to a free school meal, but this category does not attract Pupil Premium funding.
Families receiving certain other qualifying benefits or support may also be eligible, including:
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- The Guarantee element of Pension Credit
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Some families with no recourse to public funds
Please apply even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2
Although children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 already receive Universal Infant Free School Meals, we encourage eligible families to register for benefits-related Free School Meals too. This ensures the school is aware of your child’s eligibility and, where applicable, can help the school receive additional funding to support their education.
How to apply
Applications are made through Derbyshire County Council’s Free School Meals service.
You will usually need:
- Your National Insurance Number or Asylum Support Number
- Your full name and date of birth
- Your child’s full name and date of birth
The application process will check your eligibility and the school will also be notified of the outcome.
